Wigan Athletic (The Latics) History Milestones
- 1932 - was formed after the liquidation of Wigan Borough. Wigan Athletic was the fifth attempt to stabilise a football club in the town. The new club was elected to the Cheshire County League .
- 1934 - 1935 - the team became winners of Cheshire League for the second time. This season was also prominent for F.A. Cup run. Latics defeated Carlisle United 6-1. In such a way they set a record for the biggest victory by a non-league club over a league club.
- 1945 - Wigan were entered the Lancashire Combination.
- 1950 - they were almost elected to Football League, losing out a vote to Scunthorpe United.
- 1953 - 1954 - the club won the Lancashire Junior Cup. This season remarkable for a FA Cup match against Hereford United was watched by a record crowd of 27,526. It was the largest attendance ever recorded between two non-league clubs.
- 1961 - the team returned to the Cheshire County League.
- 1968 - Wigan Athletic was a founder member of the Nothern Premier League.
- 1978 - eventually the club was elected to the Football League in place of Southport.
- 1978 - 1979 - the Latics finished in 6th place.
- 1985 - Wigan won the Freight Rover Trophy. It was their first silverware as a League club.
- 1993 - they were relegeted to the new Second Division and the next season - to the Division Three.
- February, 1995 - David Whelan a millionaire businessman, took control of the club. John Deehan became a manager.
- 1996 - 1997 - the Latics won the Third Division.
- 1998 - 1999 - Ray Mathias was appointed manager. The club lost 2-1 to Manchester United in the Second Division play-off and Mathias was replaced by John Benson. He led the squad to a commanding position at the top of Division Two in his first six months. But at the end of the season Wigan lost 3-2 to Gillingham in extra time.
- 2001 - Paul Jewell took over a post of manager.
- 2003 - 2004 - Wigan team became champions of the Second Division and were promoted to the First Division for the first time in six years.
- 2003 - 2004 - the team finished in the 7th place.
- 2004 - 2005 - the Latics finished second in the Coca-Cola Championship and were promoted to the Premiership.
- May 5, 2005 - the club defeated Reading 3-1 and gained a place in the Premiership for 2005-2006 season. For the new season in the top flight the club signed sush players as: Henri Camara, Damien Francis, Ryan Taylor, Josip Skoko, Michael Pollitt, Stephane Henchoz, David Connolly, Pascal Chimbonda. The first match was against Chelsea.
- 2006 - after wins against Everton, Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Fulham and Portsmouth the team finished second in the Premiership.
- 2006 - Wigan became League Cup runners-up. They beat Arsenal 2-1, but were defeated by Wayne Rooney 4-0. the club sold such players as: Jimmy Bullard, Graham Kavanagh, Jason Roberts. Damien Francis, Stephane Henchoz and David Connolly left the team. but the squad was enreached by Emile Heskey, Denny Landzaat, Chris Kirkland, Antonio Valencia, Kevin Kilbane, David Cotterill, Fitz Hall and Emmerson Boyce.
- 2006 - 2007 - Manchester City, Bolton Wanderers, Fulham and Charlton Athletic were beaten by the Latics, but then the club had eight consecutive losses.
- February 3, 2006 - Wigan won a home match against Portsmouth with a score 1-0. The club sighned Caleb Folan, Julius Aghahowa and David Unsworth.
- March 4, 2007 - the Latics stood 15th in the Premiership.
- May 13, 2006 - 2007 - Premiership status for the next year was won by getting the victory over Sheffield United 2-1.
- May 14, 2007 - Paul Jewell was replaced by Chris Hutchings. Arjan De Zeeuw, Matt Jackson, David Unsworth, John Filan, Lee McCulloch, Leighton Baines left the club.
- 2007 - Marcus Bent was sighned. The 2007 -2008 season began with 2-1 defeat away at Everton, but then they won match against Middlesbrough 1-0 and Sunderland 3-0.
- November 5, 2007 - Frank Barlow became a new manager. The club lost 4-0 away to Tottenham.
